Moon Knight #1 (Marvel Comics)

  • Writer: Charlie Huston
  • Penciler: David Finch
  • Inker: Danny Miki
  • Colorist: Frank D’ Armata
  • Cover Artist: David Finch

This issue shows you what makes Moon Knight such a kick ass character.  They do this pretty well buy using flashbacks of Moon Knight in his prime and explaining why he fights crime the way he does.  What I liked most about this issue is that they start the examination of why would Marc Spector want to be Moon Knight and the effect being hero can have on you and when you lose that how far will you go to get that back.  Honestly, I think this what the whole “The Bottom” story arc is about.  What was the most jarring thing was in this first issue is as you read it you see this super cool bad ass dealing out some real street justice and then you end the issue with seeing a broken Marc Spector wallowing in self-pity you got to love it.  The total misdirection of action and internal dialogue was balanced well and I think Huston is doing a good job.

He has been a character that for so many years in the Marvel Universe that has got lost in the shuffle.  I have read a lot of comments on the message board when it comes to this series and the dreaded decompression conversation.  For a character that has been so far detached from the main Marvel Universe you have to make him relevant today.  I think they got so far off base with the character the last time he was in an ongoing they want to be sure they correct those previous mistakes.  What happened to just reading a story and enjoying it whole, you can’t just have the whole story in one issue.  If you want a good story let it progress like the writer intended before you judge the work as a whole.  This first story was billed as a six part story arc not a one , two, or three part I think as fans sometime when want to much in advance instead of getting it as we read.  Now if the first arc for some reason doesn’t delivery on your expectations then drop the title at that but give it a chance before you complain.
